The PlayStation 3 has been out for a long time now. I remember reading way back that some were compatible with PS2 games and some weren't. Some used hardware virtualization (basically they shoved the PS2 hardware into the PS3) and some used software emulation for backward compatibility.

How many different PS3 versions are there and what is the difference between them all?

There was a 40GB and and a 60GB version back when I bought mine.

Having the 60GB version enabled you to play PS2 games also.

Additionally there is a Slim PS3 (the current one) having 120GB Hdd.

There's a handy model comparison table at wikipedia. To summarize it:

The first 60 GB models released in Japan and the US had a pure hardware emulation for PS2 games. The second generation switched to a partially software-based emulation. This second generation was the first released in Europe.

By the end of 2007 a 3rd generation was released which dropped any PS2 backwards compatibility (all 160 GB models belong to this generation). At last there's the 4th generation: the slim models. It's the latest one.
